We invite you to participate in a new project of the Polish Doctors’ Association created with our young members in mind. Mentoring functions on the basis of an individualized relationship between two personalities in a professional space. Thanks to his rich experience, successes and failures that make up his biography, the Mentor conveys unique, individual knowledge to the mentee.

The mentoring program developed by the PMA is a project created for PMA members – Polish medical students and doctors in training.

Mentor – a doctor acting as a specialist or research worker in the medical field with many years of diverse professional experience

Mentee – a medical student/young doctor looking for advice, support or new inspiration from more experienced colleagues

.

Why is it worth it?

Mentoring is not only a dialogue but above all a meeting space, in which the conversation is conducted by two people with different professional experiences. The condition is mutual trust and sharing knowledge voluntarily and without coercion.

.

Program benefits for mentors

  • awareness of one’s own value and knowledge appreciated by others,
  • joy of sharing one’s own experiences and insights,
  • development of a network of contacts that strengthens the medical community,
  • improving skills in conveying knowledge to less experienced colleagues

.

Program benefits for mentees

  • invaluable access to the knowledge and experience of a more senior doctor, which can be the basis for systematizing one’s own professional expectations and future professional role,
  • better understanding of one’s strengths and weaknesses,
  • the ability to achieve set goals based on the mentor-mentee relationship.

Suggestions

Examples of some aspects of mentoring that may be worth paying attention to

  1. Guidance on training in a given specialty and preparation for exams.
  2. Tips on choosing courses worth taking to build your portfolio
  3. Tips on how to do a good AUDIT or QIP based on the mentor’s experience
  4. Assistance in organizing Taster Days in a given specialty
  5. Advice and guidance in choosing research work, information about interesting conferences in the field, sharing information about events in a given specialty for young doctors.
  6. Advice on organizing work time and medicolegal matters

.

Assumptions of the mentoring program

The style and format of mentoring should be individually determined by the mentor and mentee based on needs. Since the bond is the foundation of success in the mentoring process, we suggest that mentor-mentee meetings take the form of direct meetings, which translates into a more lasting and at the same time more authentic relationship between the two people. However, in some situations, other forms of mentoring using new technologies such as zoom meetings may work better.

.

Formal aspects:

  1. Participation in the mentoring program is eligible and available exclusively to PMA members
  2. Participation in the program for members is free.
  3. A PMA member doctor with inspiring and rich professional experience can become a mentor
  4. PMA matches mentors and mentees based on specific guidelines such as profile and professional experience.
